The 2002 Lawn Olympics Is Announced

PORTLAND, ME (Staff)- As Winter's shutters of night snap closed upon its bitter days, thoughts begin to drift to a magical time not long from now. A time when the sun will melt the ice and thaw the earth, and the grass will grow again. The precious daylight will stretch farther and farther into evening, extending the limits of twilight, until it reaches its pinnacle and slowing begins to subside once more. Summer Solstice. The longest day of the year, a day celebrated by ancient civilizations with their unique traditions to hail and exalt the summer season.

We also have our traditions. A celebration marked by feasting and fire, competition and contest. Lawn Olympics, held this year on the day after Solstice so as not to steal the Druid thunder. June 22, 2002. The date chosen by the gods of spirit, fire, merriment, style, and sustenance to welcome Summer. The second longest day of the year, but second to none in fun and festivity.
