Preperations for LO '02
With just days to go before Lawn Olympics 2002 the City of Portland, dare we say the whole world is abuzz with excitement. The committee is busy dotting the "i" and crossing the "t" while the lawn crew prepares for the last mow of Riverside Homestead. The guest list is starting to form with names of champions like Crandall, Sietz and Cash. Past winners from every year plan to be in attendance at this years games. As is tradition at L.O., there will also be many first time athletes joining us. And who knows, we might see a young rookie rise up and become one of Lawn Olympics great competitors. On a sadder note, the 2001 wiffleball champion, Kris Roukey, will be unable to attend this year due to contract restrictions. His new sponsor, The Akron Aeros, did express compassion for his title defense. But in the end, Roukey's contract states that he is not allowed to perform in amateur event no matter what the magnitude. To ease the backlash of public opinion, the Aeros have signed on as Lawn Olympics first official sponsor. We are proud to announce that the Wiffleball Homerun Derby will be outfitted, from bats to balls, with Akron Areos official merchandise. Also, depending on the depth of the Aeros pockets, negotiations are in the works to name the wiffleball field. While no name has been chosen yet, the planning team is not at a loss for ideas. Suggestions being looked at include: "AA Park", "Candy Field" and "What The Hell Is A Areo Anyway Stadium" From the sounds of things it appears the Bake Off is starting to heating up…(ha..I crack myself up). Members of the Anderson family, along with many other regular Lawn Olympiads, have shown an early interest in the battle of the baked goods. This once overlooked event has turned in to one of the most anticipated competitions of the day. Get out your apron because it's going to get messy. Although it is only slated as an exhibition sport, bocce will make it's debut this year. Bocce is a versatile game that can be played pretty much anywhere. But we decided to usher in this new event with a home worth enough to be part of Lawn Olympics. The grounds crew has been hard at work constructing an official court to satisfy even the most discriminating bocce players. Topped in stonedust and lined with wooden sides, the court is sure to make many enthusiasts. We hope everyone will be able to give the new addition a try. So the horseshoes pits are clean, the t-shirts are in and the kegs are on order. We are ready for this years Lawn Olympics. The Committee has many surprises that are sure to please. And additions like The Clans and bocce will make for an enjoyable day. We look forward to seeing you on The Fields of Riverside. |
