The First Draft

By Josh Wolfgram

May 20, 2008

At the Philadelphia Ritz-Carlton in 1936, the National Football League held the first amateur draft. Bert Bell, the owner of the Philadelphia Eagles, spearheaded the concept as a means of spreading talent around league and to create parody. Since the inception of the draft, the model has been used in other major sports leagues (NBA in 1947 and MLB in 1965), with each league tailoring it to their needs. It is a natural progression for a competitive league to have a draft and Lawn Olympics follows the lead of the NFL by initiating the first ever Clan Draft.

The war rooms will be set up at 39 Broadturn on the hallowed grounds of Lawn Olympics. Clan Captains have been preparing for the draft since it was officially announced at the Lawn Olympics Banquet in March. The Captains have worked tirelessly to research the best clan members to fit their systems, searching the web site for past winners, analyzing previous Lawn Olympics victories, and developing strategies for this year’s event. However, it is not until the draft sheets are distributed that the most educated decisions can be made.

Each Clan Captain will be supplied with statistic sheets on all Olympians who choose to participate in the draft. The sheets are generated by the Olympians themselves, but will be processed by the draft experts of the Lawn Olympics Committee before being distributed to the Captains. God of Fire, the Mel Kiffer Jr. of the Lawn Olympics Draft, has mountains of research on the wiffleball batting average, average egg-throwing distance, and croquet accuracies percentages for each player. God of Merriment is handling the legal angle of the draft: how much will the first pick cost the Swingers, etc. Rounding out the crew is former Olympian and youngest God, the God of Fellowship. He will bring game experience to the draft, with strategies that can only be understood if you’ve been in the trenches.

On June 7th, history will be made as Gods and Captains gather for the inaugural Lawn Olympics Draft. Although the LO draft itself is new this year, its concept has been brewing for years and its preparation has been months in the making. The future of Lawn Olympics is now.
