Lawn Olympics 2007 - Clan Captain Selection

It is January. Snow is piled high beneath the windows and the gods of Lawn Olympics are gathered around the fireplace, toddies in hand, meeting for the first time this year to begin preparations for the upcoming LO. A primary topic for the wintry meeting: who will this year’s Clan Captains be?

The discussion is always a lively one filled with recollections of past performances, character debates and general speculation. Does this person embrace and embody the spirit of Lawn Olympics? Will that individual entice the very best from their clan? Will he or she lead with conviction?

As the secret list of candidates is generated, another log goes on the fire, and the background checks begin. The gods do not take the selection process lightly, for the job of Clan Captain isn’t easy. The title carries a high level of responsibility and therefore, distinction. Many have tried; few will triumph.

It is now June. The grass is green and the skies are blue. We are proud to announce that we have selected The Clan Captains of 2007 and with honor, this year’s Captains have accepted the challenge with Gold in their eyes.
Introducing your 2007 Clan Captains:

Joe Walsh

The Ringers

As an “outlaw” in the Anderson Clan, Joe Walsh has shown himself a competitor that can handle adverse conditions. Joe knows how to ’bring the fun’ to the next level. He is a motivator that will provide leadership as well as excitement to his clan. Watch this one…something lurks behind that innocent grin. As a former Wiffleball Homerun Derby Champ, Joe should be right at home in New Pugsley Park.

Roy Ferguson

The Yokels

Quietly Roy Ferguson has collected quite a few tournament wins in his Lawn Olympics career. It seems like every year Mr. Versatility takes a different event home. But still the ever-allusive Clan win has been just out of reach. Roy’s ability to dominate will depend primarily on the weather. Roy weakness is that he is allergic to the sun. Granted it does not destroy him but when the sun is high Roy becomes mere mortal and in turn…vulnerable. So if you see a cloudy sky come June 23rd get ready for some Fergu-works!

Debbi LaChapelle

The Swingers

Where Deb goes Clan wins seem to follow. This lucky charm is ready to put The Swingers fate in her own hands. As the only female captain this year Deb has already mounted an egg size chip on her shoulder. This is a take no prisoners situation. Rise to glory or big ball of flames is her motto. There will be no in between for this Clan. Captain Deb will be mounting a well-organized game plan with plenty of flair.

Gene Shaw

The Wickets

One of the true spirits of Lawn Olympics, Gene has joined us for the games for many years. Usually a soft-spoken, considerate sportsman, Gene has all had his share of controversy over the years. There was the infamous “Glitter Egg” incident; sure they looked fabulous but would they break? Gene has not been fortunate enough to see the hardware during the awards ceremony but that did not stop him from winning the first ever LOADed Beirut Tournament in 2006.

John Wolfgram

The Pones

A Humble Giant, John Wolfgram, competes in the Croquet Tournament every other year for a reason he calls “fairness”. These would sound like big words if he didn’t back them up, but John has been in the finals or has won every Croquet Tournament he has entered. John’s leadership skills have not really been tested since his fraternity days at UMaine. Sure, he’s done a little coaching but that’s mostly for the media coverage.

Please join us in welcoming these individuals to an elite club of competitors and in thanking them for their spirit, their dedication and their service. Cheers to all, and good luck!

SPECIAL NOTE:
The winning Clan Captain from 2007 will return in 2008, in celebration of the 10th Anniversary of Lawn Olympics, to compete against former winners Adin Wolfgram (Pones – 2003), Brad Jones (Ringers – 2004), Jason Marshall (Swingers – 2005) and Sarah Adams (Swingers – 2006) in the Lawn Olympics All-Star Competition! The stakes have never been higher, for only one of these talented individuals will live the dream.
